Well like I said yesterday I would and will blog today! *pats back* :) A few months back I did a session for a modeling/acting portfolio...and guess what...these lil cuties got a gig! Yep they will be on Scrubs later this season and hopefully I can get some video via YouTube that I'll post up after the episode airs. You can check them out on jetsetmodels.com at the bottom of the page. Here are a few shots we used for their audition. Way to go boys! :)

And then I blog! Man I have the best of intentions and then something weird comes over me.  The dreaded social networking sites just pull me in like The Death Star.  Jeez even writing this little bit I have already checked twitter and facebook two three times.  Can you say attention deficit...hey that's cool I just got an email on my phone saying Lightroom 3 beta is out! Cool!  Well anyways back to my thought I need to blog more and believe me I will. It might not always be about photography, but you better believe it will be all me baby! By the way I found out some cool news about one of my head shot clients getting some work, and plan on sharing that with you tomorrow. So until then...you gettin' on the train, or you stayin' here?

October 16, 2009 // Me
Throwing in the towel? Well this morning I did.  Not sure why really, but just woke up feeling like I don't belong, or slightly out of place. I posted this same question on twitter and got some great responses, but I wanted to share my thoughts here as well. What are your thoughts? Even if you don't comment just think about it for a few minutes. I've thought this over all morning and feel confident moving forward. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Michelle:

Hi Zak! I know how you feel. I feel like that now and then and have to spend the day just unwinding (and crying!) to get myself together. I hope your day gets better!

(10.16.09 @ 04:18 PM)
Freida:

Yes! However... think about this... there are always times when we are lifted out of our daze through inspiration and encouragement from others... that help to remind us why we are pressing forward. You, Zak, were my inspiration a few months back. Somewhat defeated before even trying... you gave me the chance to shine and start my photography. Ride out your defeat... or your "throwing in the towel"... inspiration will float your way in due time, it will. If we were on top all of the time, I don't think we could truly appreciate it as much as when we hit a wall, ya know? No struggle, no growth.

(10.16.09 @ 09:28 PM)
AllisonS:

I think everyone feels this sometimes :) you definitely shouldnt quit because you're great at what you do!

(10.20.09 @ 09:08 AM)
smittengreta:

heck YESSSSSS!!!! don't know if you're specifically talking about photography, but as for me.... sometimes i'm like, IS IT WORTH IT?!?!? thanks for letting me vent, hahahaha!! :)

(10.20.09 @ 12:13 PM)
Sylvia Borgo:

I do. I do all the time. We were so many hats, don't we? We want to excel at all we do. And our strive for excellence is a good force, one that propels us forward. But this force is also the one that brings us down when we feel like haven't reached our best. Zak, always remember that you are AWESOME at all you do!

(10.20.09 @ 07:32 PM)
Jamie Burnett:

Funny... I've felt the same way for the past few weeks. Just can't make every shoot "unique enough" makes me wonder if I'm not cutting it.

(10.24.09 @ 10:58 AM)
Jaime:

I go through this in cycles Zak. For weeks at a time I feel like I'm never going to get anywhere, despite this being what I really want to do. If you're referring to photography ... YOU are doing it for the RIGHT reasons, and it shows in your work! You are awesome at what you do Zak, so chin up! :) And remember ... this feeling will pass, your motivation will be renewed ... as Freida said, "no struggle, no growth." It's funny, you also motivated me ... when I was feeling like throwing in the towel.

(10.24.09 @ 04:47 PM)
ohana photographers:

are we talking about being chargers fans? lol. jk. no, never. but i've loved photography since i was in the womb ;)

(10.26.09 @ 02:47 PM)
So Chris is all like "I can do a cartwheel!" and I'm all "dude you better!" then he's all "it's gonna rock!" and I'm like "totally dude!" That's how it happened cuz that's how we roll in SoCal! :)

Manana is Spanish for Sunday evening night right? If you have no idea what I'm talking about check the next post down. :) Anyways on to some awesomeness! A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting up with the way cute Borgo family! Sylvia is a San Diego based awesome photographer, so I knew this shoot was gonna be a hoot...and boy was I right. I left wet, sandy, and longing for some cotton candy. More on that later. We met up at Belmont Park in Mission Beach, and man oh man was it hopping for a Sunday evening! I can't wait to take our kiddos back soon! Wow that's a lot of text up there for me, so how about some pictures? :)
I really love these first two! Pure motherly love! :)
Beach family photos 2.jpg
Their youngest was in total awe of the rides! Pretty cool way to spend a Sunday evening right?
Beach family photos 3.jpg
The top one about sums up every parents life...loving moment...bam! Kiddo dead ahead now 12 o'clock!
Beach family photos 4.jpg Beach family photos 5.jpg
We had a blast watching the roller coaster whiz past!
beach family photos 6.jpg
I think this one is my new all time fav family photo! Well the second one is pretty cute too! :)
beach family photos 7.jpg
Yeah and I like this one too...hmmm I have a problem being decisive...just ask Jennifer.
beach family photos 8.jpg
Don't ever ask a young boy for cotton candy and expect a very big piece! :)
beach family photos 9.jpg beach family photos 10.jpg
Then we headed to the water for a little fun before we chased the sun away!

To say that I had a blast in Old Town Temecula on Sunday night would be a major understatement. I had a chance to hang out with fellow photographers and two cool families in a fun and relaxed setting. Perfecto for me! When I thought about organizing a group shoot I knew I wanted to keep it small, and I am so glad I did. I think we had just the right number of people to make it enjoyable. Anyways here are a few of mine from our group shoot. Be sure to post a link to your blog post or facebook gallery in your comments, so everyone can see the other photographer's perspective. I think that is going to be the coolest part for me. I love to see how others see things. A big thanks to everyone that participated. :) July 28 2009 2.jpg July 28 2009 1.jpg
Here are a few action shots. Jaime, Freida, and Sylvia doin' their thang! Be sure to stop by their blogs and tell them your thoughts! Uplifting comments make the world go around! :) July 28 2009 3.jpg

I had so much fun with this awesome family at the Del Mar Fair. It's actually the San Diego County Fair, but any true blooded Californian will never call it that. :) When I had the idea to hit up the fair I really wanted to concentrate on raw moments with this family. It wasn't a family session in the true sense of the word, but more or less a documentation of the time they shared together while enjoying the fair. I really love how this session turned out. Here are a few of my favorites. Kelly, the super fun mom, is a photographer too, and Brian is a photographer for the USMC. How sweet is that? Quick question...do you know where the title of my post comes from? Let me know by leaving a comment. I'll pick a winner on Friday morning, so get those comments in by Thursday midnight. :) The winner will get a lil surprise in the mail. :) And I know I'm being ambitious, but if we get over 25 comments I'll pick another winner. Talk about wide eyed wonder at all they see... literally. My heart just swelled and my throat tightened. (I have 2 little boys too!)! GORGEOUS captures Zak. You were right ON IT.

June 29, 2009 // Just for fun
This past week the clouds parted, the sun shined, and we engaged in the annual Schwank Family Water War. Well it's actually the first annual, but hey ya gotta start somewhere. :) I so love summertime! As a kid growing up in the hills of Julian, we would play outside from sunup til sundown. Water fights, building forts, pickin' apples...hey if you've ever been to Julian you know we make some good apples. :) And if I didn't come home covered in dirt and mud it hadn't been a good day. Well enough of my rambling...here's my kiddos trying to soak me...must get water housing. :)

You can't get me kid!

Oh my.... your kids are just adorable Zac! When my boys were that same age they used to adore 'bucket baths' out on the lawn on warm summer evenings. Your youngest looks so much like my son Eddie at that age... pale skin, bright blue eyes and white blonde wavy hair. You've got me reminiscing with these beautiful shots.

(07.12.09 @ 07:24 AM)
Andy Schwartz:

I can't kelp but giggle when I see these. The look on your boy's face with that water pistol in his hand is so priceless! What a beautiful bunch you have there Zak!

Ahhh finally back to blogging. :) Summer is here and the kids are out of school, so hopefully I can get into the swing of things and be a better blogger...I mean when I was a kid I dreamed of the day that I could blog. Well it's finally here and I just seem to cast aside my childhood ambitions for mundane things like spending time at the beach, skateboarding with my family, swimming at the pool...well you get the drift. ;)
Here are a few more from Jaime's radtastic shoot! Enjoy

In keeping with my tradition to see things differently I rented a 35mm 1.4L from Pro Photo Rental.  Seriously loved that lens...hated to send it back, but alas some day I will rent you again, or better yet perhaps my lovely wife could surprise me for Daddy's Day!  That would be cool...after all I am a good dad. Now all I have to do is get her to read my blog. ;)

Happy Mother's Day to all the super moms out there! So much of what you do comes so very natural. The way you look at your children, the way you hold and comfort them, the way you long to hurry home to see their smiling faces. Today is your day...dads listen up. Get Mom's favorite morning drink, break out the waffle iron, reach over your fence and snag one of those beautiful roses your neighbor so covets, and let Mom relax in bed while you and the kids make a fun breakfast you all can enjoy...oh and bring it to her in bed. :) Have a super day, moms! You deserve it!

April 29, 2009 // Just for fun / Me
First I really want to say thank you to everyone that commented and opened up about what drives you.  It really means a lot to hear, or read in this case, what makes others tick.  Music is really important to me and from the looks of it, ya'll feel the same. :)  I wonder what it is about music that touches us so?  I know for me that my day isn't complete without a little...well a lot of music.  I share most of my day with my kids singing in the car, the house, the shower...you know I had to go there...everyone sings in the shower right?  It just makes my day better, but when I really need a kick in the pants, I listen to Eminem's "Lose Yourself" to get pumped.  The beat, the lyrics, the overall feel of the song actually gives me goosebumps...it's weird.  Anyways sit back and take a listen...the first few lines really set the tone for me.  Enjoy!

Drum roll please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and don't base on my hair...it's late.
**Disclaimer** It's kinda hard to read the names, but I assure you that it was a fair contest. Next time I'll use a sharpie. Live and learn.

I thought I would be flamed if I ever admitted to being an eminem fan... I like to rock out when my kids aren't in the car.. helps to have harmon kardon surround... I may be a mom... but I can still be a cool mom! :) Check out Far East Movement " Girls on the Dance Floor" You just might feel like a college kid again, or at least try to dance like one! :)

Zak Schwank:

ahhh so glad I'm not the only one rockin' out as a parent. :) Check out the song this morning Jamie, and the kids started dancing like mad. LOL

April 26, 2009 // Information / Me
Just wondering what gets your heart pumping, your mind excited, and your emotions flowing?  For me it's music and one song in particular.  I am currently training for my first half marathon in 23 years...crazy right?  When I was a kid I always ran.  It was always something I loved.  I would run 10K's, Cross Country, and even half marathons...well technically one half marathon, but as I got older I got just a wee bit lazy.  I put on a few pounds and always thought it would be too much work to get back to my fighting weight.  At one point I weighed almost 250 lbs...yikes did I just write that?  Well a few years ago I said enough is enough and started the long road back to getting healthy.  Slowly I lost some weight and gained a little knowledge about healthy eating and a sound exercise plan.  I now feel like I'm fit enough to run a half marathon again. Yay!

So back to my original thought.  What gets you motivated in life?  Whether it's motivation for work, play, or something in between I want to know, and unfortunately you can't say your kids, family, etc...because that motivates everyone.  Is it a song, a book, a poem...you get the gist.

The song that motivates me and makes my skin tingle, my mind lock focus, and makes me feel like I could do anything, is up for grabs!  Just comment below with what motivates you and the first 5 people to comment will win my song via iTunes.  Don't be discouraged if you are not one of the first 5 people who comment.  I still want to hear your thoughts and everyone who comments will be entered into a drawing for a $10 iTunes card.  You have until midnight Wednesday April 29th to comment, because on Thursday I'll reveal my song and pick a winner for the iTunes card.

So what motivates you?

And since blog posts without photos are not cool, here is why I'm so fast.  Seriously, headbands do make you faster right?

Sophy:

Well, I'd have to say that music is my motivation also. And, like you Zac, I used to be a runner also. I used to run almost everyday listening to Metalica, Justice For All album. I need to download that album and start running again. I really miss it.

(04.26.09 @ 07:56 PM)
Sylvia Borgo:

Music for me as well. I, however, am a lousy runner. I don't know why I'm such a wimp when it comes to running. Now, bike riding . . . I looooove bike riding. When I do hop on the treadmill I like to listen to Brit (as in British, not Britanny) Rock. Where did I put my walkman . . . LOL!

(04.26.09 @ 08:23 PM)
greta, smitten:

i was just telling amber the other day, i'm still flabbergasted that you were once overweight! i'm so amazed at your getting your health back on track, that's what i'm working on too!! you're an inspiration!

gotta say ditto on the music. i can be feeling like crap, having the worst day, headache, about to fall asleep at the wheel, whatever... and i put on queen's rock montreal (live) and it makes the world right again. can't wait to see what your song is... hahahahaha :) with that headband i'm guessing... let's get physical???

(04.26.09 @ 09:11 PM)
Freida:

1st off... way rad photo... Jacob and I had a full on chat about it... plus your weight... who knew?? That's amazing, I would have never guessed. 2nd... good for you and the half marathon... that's wonderful! 3rd... to answer your question... any Prince song that comes on the radio... while I'm working on my stained glass... that just gets me amped up and going!

Very funny... I am far from being a runner... BUT, I will be turning 30 in October... and I thought... hmmm... I'm not getting any younger... maybe that would be my gift to myself... to train and complete a half marathon. It's in the beginning stage of my thought process... but this is the one I was looking at:

Rachael Earl:

Aerodynamic headband you got there. I have to have music to work out! Oldies are the best!

(04.27.09 @ 01:07 PM)
Chris :

I have to tell you, that headband is what gets me pumped :) Actually I dont have a specific song. Anything loud and obnoxious does the work for me often times. Typically something that I wouldnt put on when the girls are in the truck with me.

(04.27.09 @ 05:31 PM)
Chelo:

Music, definitely. But also children- their energy and love, motivates me a great deal :)

(04.27.09 @ 05:40 PM)
Jaime H.:

I never would have guessed, Zak -- I thought you were always a health nut! :) And I write this as I'm eating a brownie ... shame on me! Hmmm....music, to me, is life. I don't think I could function...or breathe...without it. It gets into my soul, gives me the strength and courage I need to fight for what is right in this world ... to fight for what I want ... and motivates me beyond anything else in this world (my kids aside, of course). It's so indescribable what it does to me, for me. I have music for every mood --- play piano when I'm stressed, jam on my guitar when I've had a rough day, pop in a good album ... anything loud that has a good beat, and I am pumped! Oh, and I totally dig the headband ... and your crazy hair! Yay for you, and good luck in training for your half-marathon!!!

(04.27.09 @ 06:30 PM)
Sarah:

HMMMM......What motivates me???? Regret is one. Whenever I think I don't want to do something I think about whether or not I will regret not at least trying. If the answere is Yes I would regret at least not trying then off I go. I can never think of a good enough excuse to have any regrets. Being outdoors always make me happy and motivates me. The feel of tired muscles makes me happy and motivates me. The music is just a bonus to make things more enjoyable. Wow that was a mouthfull. Hope you can make sense of it.

(04.27.09 @ 08:18 PM)
ohana photographers - david & kimi:

let's get physical! physical! i wanna get physical...oh dear lord. what motivates me hmmm...probably seeing you in that headband ;) but, honestly talking and seeing people more successful than me is very motivating.
high fives to you my friend on getting on the health track. me and the wifey need to stop being such workaholics and get back on the health train. so, honestly zak my friend, you you are getting me motivated!

(04.27.09 @ 08:54 PM)
Jamie Burnett:

OMG I just about spit out my water... that headband makes you look 80's fabulous! What motivates me... Not much these days, so send me some good mojo... cause I need some good healthy motivation to get in shape. Good luck in your marathon, and I love that I can see you with your point and shoot in the monitor reflection! .

(04.28.09 @ 07:31 PM)

So what are you going to do for Earth Day?  Not quite sure myself, but I do know I'll be outside.  It's been beautiful here the last few days.  I hate to brag, but So Cal is the place to be!  Last weekend I had some time to roam alone, Jennifer had our children, so I headed to Fallbrook to just relax and soak in the awesomeness.  Oh and if you thought kids were fast try photographing a bee.  It was actually fun just watching it fly from flower to flower.

Part of the reason for this post is to encourage you to get out and shoot...especially tomorrow.  Earlier this week I found a project called Earth Mosaic.  Basically get out tomorrow and photograph our world.  Upload your photo tomorrow, so we all can define our world.  You can also join their facebook group here. So I hope you all get out there tomorrow and enjoy the day!

the flowers are just beautiful - stop bragging WOULD YA?!?! i didn't even realize it was earth day tomorrow when lark and i went to chik-fil-a earlier today. there was some trash on the ground, so we were talking about litter (because it is one of my huge ginormous pet peeeeeeeeeeeeves!!!!!!) and after we talked, she saw some trash and asked me if she could pick it up and throw it away "to make our earf pretty". i was so proud of her. phoenix did the same thing at about her age. so that's what i did for earth day and it felt pretty great :)

So I'm a bit behind in my blogginess...but I must forge on and get back into the groove.  I had a planned session in San Diego this morning, but the military called and my client had to postpone.  I guess that is all part of the military life and something we civilians probably don't understand.  Speaking of the military I was accepted to Operation: Love ReUnited.  Which is a non profit organization that helps military families document their families prior to a deployment.  I'm really excited to be a part of this, and look forward to meeting some awesome military families in the future.

Just in case you are wondering this is my son, Jack.  He loves his guitar underwear...as you can tell. :)

Most families have a nightly routine consisting of brushing teeth, reading, and perhaps a soft song as your child goes to bed, and while we do those things, we also make pizza. Did he just say make pizza? Yes! I adore the evening with my family probably more than any part of the day, and this video is one reason why. Enjoy!

Okay let me start out by saying that if this guy wakes up Jack from his nap I will personally get my saw out and chop the whole tree down.  Well not really, but the thought has crossed my mind.  For the last hour I kept hearing a chainsaw humming and finally got up to check it out and what do ya know a guy in a tree with a chainsaw.  I'm not sure, but I would bet that chainsaw + tree + fall = bad.  Let's keep our fingers crossed and when he's done I'll update everyone on his medical status.

I recently met up with The Parker Family at Harveston Lake in Temecula and I forget how much fun this little park is.  We were a little worried that Mathew might make a mad dash for the water and leave the rest of us wondering why we chose the lake in the first place, but we made it around the lake dry as a bone. :)  Thanks Mathew!  The Parker's are such an adorable family and I truly feel blessed that they allow me to document their childrens lives.  Thanks guys!

So here they are folks!  New business cards and fancy bookmarks.  I have wanted to get these moo cards for quite a while.  I think they are the cat's meow!  They are not quite 3 inches long and only 1 inch wide, so I guess they are about half the size of a typical business card.  The only drawback is that you can't put your logo on the back.  Even still I think they stand out a bit which is good!  You can even have a different image for every card if you like.  How cool is that?  The bookmarks are just a little something to keep your beautiful books from getting dog ears.  The front of the bookmark reads "Librarians hate dog ears," flip it over and it reads "but kids love them!"  I just delivered some up to the Temecula Public Library, so next time you're in the children's library grab one!  The bottom photo was taken from the patio overlooking the sports park.  Decent view. ;)  I want to give a big shout out to Tami Foto for the sweet bookmark idea.  And last but not least the Photojojo Photo Rope.  I talked a little about these in the past, but wanted to mention them again.  Every time someone comes over to my home they love this display.  It's easy to install, to change out photos, and it really looks unique.  So there ya are!  I hope everyone has a great weekend. :)

Everything looks great! We just found a place that prints regular business cards on a paper with a similar feel to the moos. The moos are awesome but they get pricey after awhile. Let me know if you want a link!

A couple weeks ago I met up with Jason for some acting headshots.  Jason is  a talented theater actor, so I jumped at the chance to hang with him.  Our day of the shoot was dreary and rainy, but we made it work, at times ducking under covered walkways to dodge the rain.  Kinda makes me want a weather sealed camera body.   Speaking of rain...what has happened to our sweet little sunny so cal?  As I type it's gloomy and cold.  Ummm Mother Nature, can I have my sunny so cal back please?  Seattle called and they need you.  Okay rant over.  I hope everyone is having an awesome weekend. :)

The last few days have been cold and dry, but today the sky opened and literally dumped massive amounts of water on our quaint little town.  I've actually needed some computer time and today provides me with that opportunity.  I've been trying to finish my interview for The Bokeh Pot, so maybe I'll get that done today.  Have you ever written about yourself?  The one thing I've noticed is writing about yourself is harder than I thought. :) So work on the interview, edit a little, email, work on new marketing materials, and check facebook. Check!  Speaking of facebook...do you?  If you do, I would love for you to be my friend.  I started facebooking earlier this year and I can say that it is way fun to connect with old friends, clients, and peers.  If you don't have an account no worries, just sign up...it's free.  And free in this economy is good!
Click here to be my friend.

Although today is cold and dreary this photo just warmed my heart.  I took this Friday at my daughter's school assembly.  Jack sure loves his mom.
